Venice Ties Spanish Giants Athletic Bilbao
On paper, Venice Beach Football Club and Athletic Club Bilbao should never have shared the same field. Athletic Bilbao is a century-old institution of Spanish football, a multiple-time La Liga and Copa del Rey champion with a world-renowned academy, a professional infrastructure and generations of international stars behind its name. VBFC, by contrast, was born from pickup games on the sand and concrete of Venice Beach—a community club built by local players, artists, outsiders and dreamers rather than the machinery of elite European football.
The idea that these two clubs could meet in a competitive tournament was absurd enough; the fact that Venice Beach went onto the field, stood toe-to-toe with Athletic and earned a 1–1 draw made the moment almost impossible to comprehend. It was more than a result—it was proof that identity, belief and the culture created on a small court in Venice could compete, even for one extraordinary match, with one of the most historic football clubs in the world. However the two clubs share similar perspectives and a unique commitment to local identity.

Athletic’s story is defined by its philosophy of fielding players born or developed within the Basque football region, which has allowed the club to compete at the highest level without abandoning its roots. Generations of celebrated players have worn the red and white shirt, from early icon Rafael “Pichichi” Moreno and Joseba Etxeberria, Fernando Llorente, Javi Martínez, Aritz Aduriz, Iker Muniain, Aymeric Laporte, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Unai Simón, and brothers Iñaki and Nico Williams.
Athletic Bilbao has won eight La Liga championships, 25 Copa del Rey titles and three Spanish Super Cups, including the famous league-and-cup double of 1983–84 and an emotional Copa del Rey triumph in 2024.
VBFC drew the Spanish side 1-1 after a fierce battle in their final match of Fresno’s highly international and competitive second year of the competition. Bilbao, featuring many Spanish youth internationals, arrived as early favorites and were undefeated going into the fourth group match, with both sides still unbeaten and fiercely contesting the chance to progress. After conceding a first-half goal, VBFC returned for the second half with renewed energy, keeping possession and launching wave after wave of attacks down the flanks. A late penalty leveled the score at 1-1 for VBFC, sending the stadium into jubilant celebration. With much of the adult community wrapping up pickup and tuning into the live stream, it was a historic night for the academy and club to secure a positive result against such a storied Spanish giant. Bilbao went on to win the tournament in the end, proving to be the top team competing
The VBFC Academy began with a belief and a hunger: in a city like Los Angeles, young talent deserves more than just two professional clubs offering a fully funded pathway to compete with the world's best. This game was both a statement and a confirmation that such a vision is possible and already taking shape.
